What Is Crochet?

Crochet is a craft and art form that involves creating fabric from wool or thread using a crochet hook. The word ‘crochet’ comes from the French term for ‘small hook,’ which describes the main tool used in the craft. During crochet, you pull loops of yarn through other loops to create a fabric. Unlike knitting, which uses two needles and keeps multiple stitches open at a time, crochet is done with just one hook, and one stitch is worked at a time.

3 Things You Probably Don’t Know About Crochet

1. Crochet Can Help To Remove Stress

Crochet can offer a serene escape from the stresses of everyday life. The rhythmic motion of the crochet hook and the gradual unfolding of a pattern can be incredibly soothing, providing a focus that quiets the mind and allows for a meditative state. As you concentrate you are making room for calmness and present-moment awareness. This practice not only reduces stress and anxiety but also enhances concentration, patience, and a sense of achievement. Whether creating a simple scarf or a ‘pig in blanket’, crochet offers a unique way to unwind.

2. Crochet In The Air

One of the earliest recorded references to crochet was in the 1820s in France, where it was termed ‘crochet in the air’, likely because of the way the wool floats in the air while being worked with a single hook.

3. Earning Money Through Crochet

During the same time, Crochet became a means of survival for some communities, especially in Ireland during the Great Famine. Women crocheted intricate patterns, which they then sold to help support their families, leading to a rich tradition of Irish crochet lace.
